Lynn Ackermann, Math Department

Luzanta Alegro, Special Education Department

Mrs. Alegro comes to Stafford County from the Philippines. She has experience teaching in both the secondary and elementary levels, and she has taught children with special needs in underprivileged areas.  She has an M.A. and Doctorate Degree in Education majoring in Educational Management at EARIST in Manila, Philippines.  She is currently working on her M.A. in Special Education.  As a Boy Scout Medal of Merit recipient and an outstanding teacher awardee, facilitator, and archery coach, Luz believes patiently teaching students will give them a fighting chance for a more independent and fulfilling life ahead. Black Hawks, she is One with you.

Cathy Ashley, Special Education Department

Mrs. Ashley is in her thirty-third year of teaching Special Education. She is a graduate of Anna Maria College, located in Paxton, Massachusetts, with a Bachelor of Arts in Special Education and Elementary Education. Cathy has been a member of the Black Hawk faculty/staff at Brooke Point for thirteen years. Cathy is looking forward to a great school year.

Stephanie Athanasaw, Arts Department

Mrs. Athanasaw is a visual arts teacher at Brooke Point High School, currently teaching Art 1, Art 4, and AP Studio Art. Mrs. Athanasaw graduated from Mansfield University in northern Pennsylvania. She taught art for three years in Pennsylvania before moving to Virginia and has been teaching at BPHS for eight years. Mrs. Athanasaw resides in Spotsylvania County with her husband and two children.

Vanessa Austin, Physical Education Department

Ms. Austin has her Bachelor of Science Degree from Hampton University. She has been teaching in Stafford County the past seven years.

Terri Baca, Science Department

Mrs. Baca is in her thirteenth year of teaching. She is a graduate of Old Dominion University with a degree in Geology. Mrs. Baca has been a member of the Black Hawk faculty/staff at Brooke Point for six years. Before becoming a Black Hawk she taught at Woodbridge Senior High in Prince William County.

Joseph Bailey, Social Studies Department

Mr. Bailey grew up in St. Albans, West Virginia, and graduated with his undergraduate degree from Marshall University in 1998. After teaching for five years, he went back to school and earned his Masters degree in Education in the Advanced Studies in Teaching and Learning program from George Mason University in 2006. He has a background in archaeology, having participated in several field digs, including at Jamestown, Virginia. Three years ago, Mr. Bailey also got the opportunity to study abroad in Turkey for three weeks. He is currently married and has two children, ages five and two.

Susan Baitis, RN, Career and Technology Education Department

Mrs. Baitis, RN received her initial nursing education from Germanna Community College and has more than twenty years of experience in the health care industry. She has been teaching Health & Medical Sciences at Brooke Point High School for seven years and serves as the advisor for Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA). Mrs. Baitis has been recognized in Whos Who Among Americas Teachers and was named 2007 National Outstanding HOSA Advisor from Virginia. She teaches Introduction to Health and Medical Sciences and Health Assistant.

Ron Barricklow, Arts Department

Mr. Barricklow has a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Performance from Shenandoah Conservatory, and a Master’s Degree in Music Education with Performance Emphasis from The Hartt School, University of Hart ford.  Mr. Barricklow has been an orchestra director for thirteen years for Stafford County Public Schools and is the Orchestra Director at Brook Point High School and Stafford Middle School.  In addition, he maintains a private studio where he teaches beginning to advanced strings. He is founding musical director of the Rappahannock Youth Symphony, and he has conducted the Vivace Orchestra since its inception in 1998.   Mr. Barricklow studied viola with Kenneth Starch and Steve Tenenbom.  He enjoys performing as a violist with the Rappahannock Pops and the Fredericksburg String Quartet. Mr. Barricklow is an active member of VBODA, MENC, VASTA, and ASTA.

Kristen Baumbach, Counseling Department

Ms. Baumbach joined Brooke Point High School's Counseling Team in the 2006-2007 school year, and is in her fourth year with Stafford County Schools.  She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from St. John Fisher College in Rochester, New York, and her Master of Science in School Counseling from the University of Rochester in 2004.  Ms. Baumbach has been a National Certified Counselor for over 3 years. As a new Co-Sponsor of Brooke Point's InterAct Club, Ms. Baumbach is looking forward to a busy year helping students become active in their community!

Ginger Beach, Science Department

Mrs. Beach is currently in her ninth year of teaching. She completed her undergraduate work at Mary Washington University and completed her Masters in Education through George Mason University. She has been a member of the Black Hawk faculty for six years. Before becoming a Black Hawk, she worked in Prince William County for three years. She currently teaches Earth Science and Oceanography at BPHS. She also sponsors the Science Club.

Sam Benson, Career and Technology Education Department

Mr. Benson holds a B.S. in Education from Hampton University, graduating as “Industrial Arts Teacher of the Year." He also received a Master’s Degree in Vocational Education from Old Dominion University. Mr. Benson received a Doctorate of Theological Studies and an Honorary Doctorate of Divinity from Spirit of Truth Institute in Richmond, Virginia in 1998.  Mr. Benson came to Stafford County Public Schools in August 2005 with over thirty-four years of service as a Public School Teacher in the Commonwealth of Virginia, most recently in Prince William County. Presently, he teaches Construction Technology and Production Systems Technology.

Marialena Bridges, Director of Counseling

Mrs. Bridges holds a Master of Education in Counseling and Development from George Mason University and a Bachelor of Science in Social Psychology from Park University. An avid learner, she is in her third year of a doctoral program pursuing a doctorate in Educational Leadership. She retired from the Marine Corps as a Master Gunnery Sergeant after 22 years of service and is in her 11th year as a counselor at Brooke Point High School. Mrs. Bridges is married and has two boys, ages 15 and 21, and a miniature daschund named Glori.

Mrs. Brooks is in her first year of teaching at Brooke Point High School. She is a graduate of Radford University with a Master’s degree in Special Education.

Jill Bryant, Career and Technology Education Department

Mrs. Bryant is in her fifth year of teaching in the Family and Consumer Science department. This year she is teaching the Culinary Arts courses. Mrs. Bryant graduated from Western Michigan University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Secondary Education and Family and Consumer Science. She is currently pursuing her Masters in Initiatives in Educational Transformation from George Mason University.  Mrs. Bryant is the Head swim coach for Brooke Point as well as an Assistant Coach for spring track.

Jennifer Burdsal, English Department

Mrs. Burdsal is in her first year of teaching English at Brooke Point High School. She has earned a Bachelor’s degree in English from Wright State University and a Master’s of Education from the University of Mary Washington. She is looking forward to a great year at BPHS!

Rick Butler, Special Education Department

Mr. Butler is entering his thirtieth year in Education. This is his fourth year at Brooke Point High School. Mr. Butler has an undergraduate degree in Speech and Language Pathology and holds Masters Degrees in the Special Education areas of Learning Disabilities, Mental Retardation, and Emotional Disturbances. Mr. Butler received both his Bachelors and Masters Degrees from Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia. This year Mr. Butler is teaching Earth Science and Pre-Algebra. Mr. Butler is also the Head Coach of the BPHS “Lady Black-Hawks” Basketball team. He is married to Patricia Butler who is a teacher at Stafford High School and enjoys the Outer Banks and his three dogs.

Hope Cline, Special Education Department

Ms. Cline received a Bachelor's degree with a double endorsement in Special Education and Education from Wayne State College in Wayne, Nebraska.  She has taught four years in Nebraska, six years in New Jersey, and fourteen years at Brooke Point High School.  She teaches in collaborative English classes and is looking forward to the year at Brooke Point High School.

Lisa M. Cover-Tucci, Arts Department

Mrs. Cover-Tucci is a Theatre teacher and the ARTS department Chair at Brooke Point High School. Ms. Cover teaches Technical Drama and various levels of Acting. She holds a B.F.A. in Theatre Education from Virginia Commonwealth University and is currently working on her Masters degree. As well as directing and acting, Mrs. Cover-Tucci is an accomplished artist who has participated in public art displays such as Fintastically Fredericksburg. Working with her students, the play Mrs. Cover-Tucci directed, placed second at district and had a good showing at regional competition in the VHSL one-act play competition this past year. She is the sponsor of "The BP Players," Brooke Point's Drama Club.  Mrs. Cover-Tucci is excited about the coming school year.

Martha Covington, Foreign Language Department

Mrs. Covington is a graduate of Northeast Louisiana University (now University of Louisiana at Monroe). She has a BA in Speech, Language and Hearing. She is a licensed Speech Pathologist in Louisiana. She has been teaching for twenty years, with experience as a Speech Pathologist, a Deaf Education teacher, and an ASL teacher.   She has been teaching ASL in Stafford County for six years. She is certified to teach Deaf Education K-12 and American Sign Language in Virginia. She is currently teaching ASL 1, ASL 2, and Photojournalism 1, 2, and 3. She is the yearbook adviser and the ASL Club adviser.

Cheryl Crane, Arts Department

Ms. Crane has a Masters in Interdisciplinary Arts. She is a professional artist who displays her paintings, glass and mixed media nationally. She also teaches private art instruction to all ages in her Fredericksburg Studio.

Ms. Davis is in her tenth year of teaching. She is a graduate of Randolph-Macon College with a degree in Latin and Classical Studies. She has been a member of the Black Hawk faculty at Brooke Point for ten years.

Deb Delaney, Special Education Department

Nancy Dembo, Counseling Department

Mrs. Dembo graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Bloomsburg University and a Master of Arts degree in Counseling from Villanova University. She is originally from the Philadelphia area, where she previously taught Business Education classes. Mrs. Dembo is now in her twelfth year as a counselor in the Stafford County Public School system. She has been at Brooke Point for eight years. She lives in Spotsylvania County with her husband and two sons, ages 16 and 19.

Mary Dobson, Counseling Department

Ms. Dobson holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and a Master of Arts Degree in Counselor Education from East Carolina University.  Before coming to Brooke Point in 2005, she had 3 years of school counseling experience in both elementary and high school.  In addition, Mrs. Dobson worked as a counselor for a community college.

Mr. England is a graduate of Radford University and is currently seeking a Masters Degree in Special Education. He comes to Brooke Point High School from Virginia Beach with four years teaching experience. He will be a member of the Science department co-teaching in Biology and Ecology. Mr. England is a graduate of North Stafford High School and is excited to be back in his hometown. In his spare time he enjoys fishing, golfing, or playing tennis with his wife, Dianna.

Diane Farren, Special Education Department

Micki Feagans, Special Education Department

Mrs. Feagans has been teaching for nine years. Her first three years of teaching were at East Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte, NC. She has been teaching at Brooke Point for the last six years.  Mrs. Feagans earned her Bachelors in Special Education from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.  She is looking forward to a great year at Brooke Point. GO BLACK HAWKS!!!

Reese Flory, Arts Department

Mr. Flory joined the Brooke Point faculty in Fall 2007 as the choral director. He teaches Music Theory and conducts Brooke Point's five choirs: Beginning Men's, Beginning Women's, Concert Choir, Chamber Choir, and the Madrigal Singers. A native of Virginia, he graduated from Longwood University with a Bachelor of Music Education. He is thrilled to be able to share his love of music with the students at Brooke Point High and is looking forward to another great school year.

Benjamin Forbes, Math Department

Mr. Forbes is a Mathematics teacher at Brooke Point High School. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from Allegheny College and a Masters degree in Education from Duquesne University. Mr. Forbes has been teaching Mathematics for twelve years in Stafford County. Classes taught by Mr. Forbes include Programming 1, Programming 2, Algebra 1 Part 1, Algebra 1 Part 2, Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2 and Algebra 3. This year his students will learn about Algebra, Geometry, and Statistics.

Kimberly Frazier, English Department

Ms. Frazier received her Bachelor's Degree in English and American Literature from the University of California, San Diego in 1985 and her Master's Degree in English in 1992. She has taught on and off for the past twenty years. She has taught English at the middle school and community college level and Creative Writing at the elementary school level. She is a California native but considers Stafford her home away from home! 

Tonya Fullerwinder, Business Department

A native of Danville, VA, Ms. Fullerwinder, is in her fourth year of teaching. She has a BS in Business Management from Virginia State University and an MBA from Averett University. She teaches Business Law, Principles of Business & Marketing, and Sports & Entertainment Marketing. Ms. Fullerwinder is certified in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. She is also nationally certified in both Customer Service and Sales. She is the proud mother of one daughter, Rachel, whom she refers to as her motivation.

Craig Giles, Math Department

Mr. Giles is in his seventh year of teaching. He received his Bachelors of Arts degree in Mathematics from Ithaca College in 1993 and his teaching endorsement from Gardner-Webb University in 2001. Mr. Giles is a new member to the Black Hawk faculty. His previous six years were spent teaching at King George High School. Mr. Giles is the co-sponsor of the National Honor Society at Brooke Point High. Mr. Giles is also currently working towards a Masters of Education in Secondary Mathematics.

Kara Grooms, Counseling Department

Ms. Grooms holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in psychology from Niagara University as well as a Master of Education Degree and CAS degree in School Counseling from the State University of New York at Buffalo. She is currently in her sixth year as a school counselor at Brooke Point High School. Ms. Grooms also serves as an Assistant Lacrosse Coach and Assistant Indoor Track Coach. Go Black Hawks!

Diane “D.D.” Haley, School Social Worker

Mrs. Haley is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who began her "second career" as a School Social Worker for Stafford County Public Schools in August of 2006. For the twenty-five years preceding that time, she was employed as a Family Counselor with the State of Virginia in the offices of the 15th District Court Service Unit (juvenile intake, probation and parole). Mrs. Haley graduated from Virginia Wesleyan College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology in 1973 and obtained her Master’s Degree in Social Work from Norfolk State University in 1979, relocating to Fredericksburg, Virginia that same year. She divides her time between Brooke Point High School and Stafford Middle School.

Mondell Hampton, Business Department

Robin Hayes, Math Department

Mrs. Hayes has been teaching for eighteen years in the state of Virginia. She has been teaching at Brooke Point for fourteen years...one of the original teachers to open BPHS. She received her Bachelor's of Education in Secondary Mathematics from Longwood College (now Longwood University). She currently teaches Algebra I and Algebra III. She is proud to be a part of the Black-Hawk Family. GO HAWKS!!

Carly Hegna, Social Studies Department

Mrs. Hegna received her Bachelors degree from Radford University in the fields of History and Social Sciences. This is her third year at Brooke Point High School as a member of the history department. She will be coaching the freshmen girls' basketball team this year. Her father teaches at Thompson Middle School and her mother is a teacher in Prince William county. She recently married and is excited to keep moving forward in her life while teaching the amazing students at Brooke Point High School! Go Hawks!

Bill Hewitt, Social Studies Department

Mr. Hewitt is in his fifth year of teaching. He is a graduate of Rutgers University with a degree in Political Science and History. Mr Hewitt has also taken additional graduate level education courses in education and history at West Chester University, Temple University and Mary Washington University. Mr. Hewitt has been a member of the Black Hawk staff for five years.  He also serves as the Wrestling Coach at Brooke Point.

Mary Catherine Hornung, English Department

Mrs. Hornung was born and raised in the bayous of South Louisiana. She and her husband have been residents of Stafford County for thirty-four years. Their four children are products of Stafford County Public Schools. After fourteen years at Stafford Middle School, she moved to Brooke Point in 1996. Her faculty honored her in 2000 by naming her Brooke Point Teacher of the Year. She is faculty adviser to The Hawkeye, Brooke Point’s student-run newspaper and serves as The Commonwealth District Reader Coordinator for Academic Team. She holds a BA in English from Our Lady of the Lake University, San Antonio, Texas. Mrs. Hornung has six grandchildren who keep her busy with field trips to the pumpkin patch, soccer and baseball games and gymnastics practices. She is passionate about reading, walking, leisurely strolls on the beach and the Brooke Point Black Hawks!

Kitty Hughes, Business Department

Mrs. Hughes holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Virginia Tech. Mrs. Hughes is in her nineteenth year in Stafford County Public Schools. She has been at Brooke Point High School since its opening in 1993. Before Brooke Point, Mrs. Hughes was a teacher at Stafford High School. Mrs. Hughes has taught a wide array of business classes.   She is certified by Microsoft Corporation in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. She also holds an IC3 certification from Certiport. Mrs. Hughes currently teaches Design, Multimedia, and Web Technologies and Advanced Design.  She is also the CTE testing coordinator at BPHS and the Apple Federal Credit Union liason.

Anne Hyams, Social Studies Department

Ms. Hyams is new to the Brooke Point staff and is in her ninth year of teaching. She previously taught Advanced Placement United States History in Solana Beach, California. She graduated from North Georgia College and State University with a Bachelors of Science in education. She is looking forward to a wonderful year teaching Advanced Placement and Honors World History at Brooke Point. Go Blackhawks!

Rondall James, Arts Department

Mr. James is a native of Hampton, Virginia. He attended Virginia State University where he earned a BFA degree in Art. He also attended Virginia Commonwealth University to obtain his masters degree in Art. He has taught Art at the high school level for twenty-eight years, and three of those years have been in Stafford County. In 1999 he served as National President for his fraternity and he was recognized as one of The 100 Most Influential Blacks in America by Ebony magazine.

Kiri Johnson, Technology Resource Teacher

Ms. Johnson is in her fitth year as Instructional Technology Resource Teacher at Brooke Point. Prior to earning a Master’s Degree in Integrating Technology at George Mason University, she taught German for seven years at Brooke Point. Ms. Johnson grew up in St. Mary’s County, Maryland and graduated from St. Mary’s College of Maryland. She spent a year abroad and received a Kurzzeit Zertifikat from the University of Heidelberg, in Heidelberg, Germany. Although she misses teaching German, she is happy to be helping her colleagues use technology in their instruction to promote student learning.

Tresa Jones, Social Studies Department

Mrs. Jones is in her eighth year at Brooke Point and her tenth year of teaching. She attended Penn State University where she received a Bachelors of Science in Secondary Social Studies Education. While at Penn State she earned twelve Varsity letters in Cross-Country, Indoor Track and Outdoor Track. She was a four time NCAA Qualifier and All Big-Ten Conference member. Tresa earned her Masters in Curriculum and Instruction from George Mason University in 2002 and became a National Board Certified Teacher in 2004. Tresa currently teaches World History 9, US/VA History, and Sociology. She is also the Head Cross-Country and Track and Field Coach at Brooke Point.

Joe Kania, Physical Education Department

Mr. Kania is in his thirty-first year of teaching. Joe is a graduate of West Virginia Institue of Technology with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education, Health, and Driver Education. Joe also obtained a Masters of Science degree in Safety Education from Marshall University.  Joe has been a member of of the Black Hawk family as a teacher and the boys' varsity basketball team since the school first opened the doors in 1993. He also serves as the driver education co-ordinator here at BPHS. When not at the school , he likes to travel and play golf.

Kristen Knott, Math Department

Mrs. Knott has been teaching at Brooke Point since it opened in the fall of 2003. She is a member of the mathematics department and teaches Algebra I and Math Analysis. She earned her undergraduate degree in Secondary Mathematics Education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and her masters in education from George Mason University.

John Kraus, Physical Education Department

Mr. Kraus graduated from High School in 1970 and from the University of Delaware in 1975. He has been teaching for thirty years and has worked with all grade levels. He has also coached  football, basketball, track, lacrosse and wrestling. His favorite hobby is big game fishing.  Mr. Kraus is temporarily serving as Brooke Point's Teacher on Administrative Assignment

Mike Kuchinski, Math Department

Laura Lacey, Social Studies Department

Mrs. Lacey earned undergraduate and graduate degrees in Lberal Studies and History from Mary Washington College and the University of Texas at Arlington, respectively. She currently teaches World History and Learn and Serve at BPHS. She is the author of Stay Off the Skyline, the history of the Sixth Marine Division and U.S. representative of the Battle of Okinawa Museum. 

Ulrike Lamb, Foreign Language Department

Mrs. Lamb is exited to spend her second year at Brooke Point High School teaching German I, II, III, IV, and V. Originally from Bad Nauheim, Germany, Frau Lamb attended the University of Mary Hardin Baylor in Texas, where she graduated with honors and a degree in English and history. Before coming to Brooke Point, she taught Sophomore English in Texas, and Language Arts, Advanced 8th Grade English, Reading, and German at A.G. Wright Middle School. Prior to teaching, Frau Lamb worked as a translator. She has lived and traveled extensively throughout Europe and the Middle East. In 2004/05 she was named to the list of “Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers”. Frau Lamb lives in Stafford with her husband, son, and daughter. She will again sponsor the German club and is excited to share her love for her native language with the students of Brooke Point. Schwarze Falken sind Nummer 1.

Cynthia Larsen, English Department

Mrs. Larsen earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Albright College in Reading, Pennsylvania and her Master’s degree in Basic Human Sciences (Psychology) from Hood College in Frederick, Maryland. She has taught English at Brooke Point High School for ten years. Prior to that, she taught in New Jersey and Maryland. She is looking forward to the upcoming year at Brooke Point High School.

Bill Leap, Career and Technology Education Department

Mr. Leap is in his twenty-second year of teaching. He is a graduate of Longwood College with a degree in English and holds a Master’s Degree in Liberal Studies from Mary Washington College. He has also pursued graduate study in Theater, Library Science, English, and Television. He has been a member of the Black Hawk faculty at Brooke Point for eight years. Prior to that he taught at Stafford Middle School in Stafford County, William Monroe High School in Greene County, Fork Union Military Academy in Palmyra, and as an adjunct at Virginia Commonwealth University and James Madison University. In addition to his teaching experience, Mr. Leap has also served as managing artistic director for a local community theater and manages a small business specializing in digital photography and videography. When not working with students in Stafford County, he enjoys training and showing horses as well as flying airplanes.

Larry Letkiewicz, English Department

Mr. Letkiewicz teaches English 10 and Honors English 9. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in English and a Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education from Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg. In addition, Mr. Letkiewicz has been the sponsor for the Brooke Point Interact Club for the past four years. Mr. Letkiewicz is currently teaching for his eighth year, having taught in the Tampa/St. Petersburg area of Florida prior to coming to Brooke Point High School. 

Rita Lysher, Science Department

Mrs. Martí has an undergraduate degree from the

University of Maryland University College Europe (BA History with a minor in English).  She is working on a master in Curriculum Education from the University of Phoenix.  She was a substitute teacher for two years in SHAPE, Belgium and one year in Quantico Marine Corp Base, Virginia.  She is native Spanish speaker and loves to share with others her language and culture.

Lynn Miller, English Department

Mrs. Miller is in her twentieth year of teaching in Stafford County. She has been a member of the Black-Hawk faculty since this school opened.  As a graduate of the University of Mary Washington, Mrs. Miller holds a Master's degree in Liberal Arts.  In addition, Mrs. Miller achieved National Board Certification in Language Arts and is a Teacher Consultant for the Northern Virginia Writing Project.

Mrs. Mills received her Bachelors of Art degree in English and went on to receive her Masters of Science degree in Educational Administration from Texas A&M University-Commerce. After graduating with her Masters, she worked as a disciplinary hearing officer within several colleges and universities before returning to school to earn her teaching license. She earned her licensure from University of Mary Washington. Mrs. Mills has been teaching English at Brooke Point since 2004. She is currently the sponsor for the Senior Class and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Stacey Minor-Ross, Special Education Department

John Montez, Social Studies Department

Mr. Montez, a graduate of the University of Mary Washington, received his undergraduate degree with a major in history and political science. Having completed graduate studies at Stanford University and University of Southern Maine, he is a masters candidate at Old Dominion University. Mr. Montez teaches World, AP United States, US/Virginia history, and Sociology. Mr. Montez was the 2006 Presidential Academy for Teachers of American history and civics fellow; the 2007 Stanford University, Gilder Lehrman fellow in Constitutionalism; 2004 and 2007 Ashbrook Institute at Ashland University fellow in American history (American Foreign Policy). In addition to his teaching duties, Mr. Montez is the boys' tennis coach and the freshman class sponsor.

Carlene Moore, Special Education Department

John O'Brien, Social Studies Department

Mr. O'Brien was born in Sioux City, Iowa. He attended the University of Iowa, where he received his B.A. and the University of South Dakota, where he earned his M.A.  He taught in various high schools in Iowa for fifteen years before moving to Stafford with his wife and three daughters in 2005. He earned National Board Certification in 1999. He has assessed Advanced Placement exams in US and World History and has worked as a trainer for the Education Testing Service in the summers since 2001. He enjoys reading, golf and family.

Pete Ortiz, Social Studies Department

Mr. Ortiz retired from the U.S. Marine Corps and has been teaching at Brooke Point for the past seven years. A graduate of the United States Naval Academy, Mr. Ortiz has also been awarded Masters Degrees in Management, International Relations, and National Security and Strategic Studies from various Universities.

Desiree Panyard, Physical Education Department

Ms. Panyard has a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education and a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership. She has been teaching for eight years and has been in Stafford County for the last three.

Michael Paul, Business Department

Mr. Paul has taught business and marketing classes at Brooke Point High School for all four years of his teaching career. He retired from a thirty year career in sales, marketing, and management. Mr. Paul holds a Bachelors of Business Management degree from the University of Maryland, and a Masters of Business Administration from the College of William and Mary. He has been married for twenty-six years and has two children.

Jina Price, Science Department

Mrs. Price is a native of Virginia and received both her Bachelor's of Biological Sciences and Masters of Education from Mary Washington College. She began her teaching experience as a paraprofessional at Kate Waller Barrett Elementary for three years. She then moved into full-time position as a Biology and Ecology teacher at Colonial Forge High School. Currently, Mrs. Price is going into her second year teaching Human Anatomy & Physiology and Biology at Brooke Point High School. When not in school, she can be seen lounging in a local coffee shop, jogging in downtown Fredericksburg, or shopping! Mrs. Price is looking forward to another awesome year at Brooke Point. Go BLACKHAWKS!

June Prim, Business Department

Mrs. Prim is from Providence, R.I. She is currently in her 11th year of teaching. Mrs. Prim is a graduate of Virginia State University with a Bachelor of Science in Administrative System Management with an Endorsement in Business Education. She currently teaches Digital Input Technologies , Accounting, Advanced Accounting and Keyboarding Applications. Mrs. Prim is married to a Computer Scientist and has three children and five grandchildren

Gayle Reddington, Foreign Language Department

Mrs. Reddington is a native of New Jersey. She graduated from Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, where she majored in Spanish. She has been very fortunate to have lived and taught in beautiful areas of our country: Connecticut, Massachusetts, California, and Virginia. She is licensed to teach Spanish, English, and ESL, and is in her fourth year of teaching Spanish at Brooke Point HS. She enjoys teaching, traveling, reading, and, most especially, spending time with her family.

Dewey Reynolds, English Department

Mr. Reynolds is an eighteen-year veteran teacher. Throughout his career, he has taught English at all levels and all grades. He currently teaches ninth and eleventh grade. He enjoys spending time with his family, racing bicycles, and taking the occasional nap.

Lisa Huggins, English Department

Miss Huggins is an English teacher at Brooke Point High School. She received her English and Education degrees from James Madison University. She has taught English in both Prince William County and Stafford County. She has taught grades 8-12, standard through honors level. In addition, she has experience in dual-enrollment teaching and hopes to add a Special Education endorsement to her repertoire. After a year at A.G. Wright Middle School, Miss Huggins is excited to be back at BPHS. She looks forward to teaching grades 9, 10 and 11 this year. Go Blackhawks!

Patricia Roberts, Business Department

Mrs. Roberts is in her fifteenth year of teaching in Business and Information Technology. She is a graduate of Virginia State University, Petersburg, Virginia with a degree in Business Education—Bookkeeping--Data Processing--Keyboarding. Mrs. Roberts has been a member of the Black Hawk team for twelve years. She teaches Keyboarding, CIS, ACIS and Programming. Mrs. Roberts is certified in Microsoft Word and Excel and is IC3 certified. Her hobbies include reading and spending time with her family. She is married to a retired Marine and has three adult children.

Timothy Roberts, Administration Assistant

Mr. Tim Roberts has earned his undergraduate degree, Masters in Education, and his certificate in Educational Leadership from Mary Washington College. In 1999 he started his career as a special education teacher at Snowden Academy in Fredericksburg VA. After three years at Snowden, he joined Stafford County Public Schools where he helped open its public day school. After seven years in the classroom he became a Resource Itinerant Teacher where he provided additional assistance to special need students as dictated by their IEP’s. In the middle of the 2008 school year he accepted a job at Brooke Point as the principal intern.

Melynda Rose, Business Department

Mrs. Rose is in her sixth year of teaching marketing at Brooke Point. She is a graduate of Mars Hill College in Western North Carolina with a degree in Fashion Merchandising. She completed her teacher certification at the University of Mary Washington. She was employed as a sales manager and buyer with Saks Inc. from 1997-2000. She has been a member of the Black Hawk faculty since fall of 2001. Mrs. Rose is also the DECA advisor at Brooke Point.

Julie Sandidge, Library Media Center

Ms. Julie Sandidge has been a Librarian for twenty years. She is a graduate of Peabody College of Vanderbilt University with a degree in Library Science.  Ms. Sandidge has been a member of the Black Hawk faculty for seven years. She is the sponsor of the Multicultural Club and the BP Book Chats and is co-sponsor of the History Club.  Prior to becoming a school Librarian, Ms. Sandidge worked in public libraries for twelve years. She also holds a B.S. in Secondary Education from Georgia State University.  Ms. Sandidge is a native of Kingsport, Tennessee and enjoys traveling with her three cocker spaniels and attending Scottish Festivals and craft shows.

Jayleen Schott-Bruce, Special Education Department

Ms. Schott has been working at Brooke Point High School as a Special Education teacher since the Fall 2002. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from George Mason University and a Masters of Science in Special Education from Longwood University. Also while at Longwood University she received her licensure to teach the Social Sciences. Ms. Schott currently teaches Collaborative English 10 and Collaborative US/VA History. Since being at Brooke Point Ms. Schott has taught Collaborative English 9, Collaborative and Self-Contained English 11, Collaborative and Self-Contained English 12, Collaborative World History I, Collaborative US/VA Government, and Learning Strategies. In addition to teaching, she serves as the Color Guard Director for the Marching Black-hawks and Winter Guard. Ms. Schott loves teaching and looks forward to another wonderful year!

Vickie Semeia, Special Education Department

Mrs. Semeia is the department chairperson for special education and has served in this capacity for four years.  She received her bachelor’s degree from James Madison University, master’s degree from Old Dominion University, and is currently pursuing an endorsement in administration and supervision through Virginia Commonwealth University. Mrs. Semeia has devoted her entire career to students with disabilities both at school and in the community. For over fifteen years, she served as a volunteer for Area 11 Special Olympics and was an officer on the local board of directors for ten years. She has had the honor to serve as the head equestrian coach for the 1999 Special Olympics World Games in North Carolina and as the Assistant Head of Delegation for Team Virginia in the inaugural USA National Games in Ames, Iowa in 2006.

Mr. Shoemake is currently in his fourth year at teaching, and his fourth year at Brooke Point High School. He graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with a degree in history, and he is currently teaching World History II, and United States/Virginia History.

Mrs. Singh is a social studies teacher. She graduated from University of Mary Washington with a BLS. She also has a degree in political science and a diploma in journalism from Himachal Pradesh University India. She has been teaching at BPHS for thhirteen years.

Thomas Skinner, Science Department

Mr. Skinner has been teaching physics at Brooke Point since the school opened in the fall of 1993. Prior to that he taught at Courtland High for two years. Tom retired from the US Navy in 1989 as a Commander, with combat service in Viet Nam. Academically, Tom has degrees from the University of Missouri (Economics, 1966), Mary Washington College (Earth & Space Science, Summa Cum Laude, 1991) and diplomas from Capital Radio and Electronics Institute, New York Institute of Technology and the National War College (National Defense University). Tom is a member of ALPHA PHI SIGMA (National Honor Society, Academics), KAPPA DELTA PI, (National Honor Society, Education), CHI BETA PHI, (National Honor Society, Science and Mathematics), and ALPHA SIGMA LAMBDA, (National Honor Society, Liberal Studies). Tom's hobbies include amateur radio (KJ3D) and astrophotography.

Mr. Skirchak is in his twenty-first year of teaching in Stafford County. He is a graduate of California University of Pennsylvania with a B.A.and a M.A. in English. Mr. Skirchak has been a member of the Black-Hawk faculty at Brooke Point for fourteen years.

Samantha Soukup, Math Department

Ms. Soukup is teaching Algebra 1 and 2 at Brooke Point this year. Prior to working in Stafford County, she attended Longwood University where she majored in Pure Mathematics and Liberal Studies. Miss Soukup lives in Stafford and enjoys coaching and playing soccer, hiking, kayaking, and surfing. She looks forward to a good year of teaching and coaching at BPHS.

Mary Southall, English Department

Mrs. Southall teaches English 10 and Oral Communications, sponsors the Top Hawks program, and is Department Chairperson for English at Brooke Point High School. Mrs. Southall also serves as a member of the School Improvement Plan Team. She received a B.A. in English from Mary Washington College, holds a Collegiate Professional License with the Commonwealth of Virginia and is endorsed to teach English, theatre arts preK-12, and speech communication. Mrs. Southall came to Brooke Point High School when it opened in 1993. She previously taught English 9, English 10, English 12, drama, and technical drama for seven years at North Stafford High School. She was director of the Fredericksburg Children’s Musical Theatre for three years and director of the Fredericksburg Players for two years. A native Staffordian and graduate of Stafford Senior High School, Mrs. Southall is proud to give her best to the school system that gave her excellent preparation for her future.

Marci Spellman, Science Department

Mrs. Spellman is excited to begin her sixth year of teaching Earth Science at Brooke Point High School. She moved to Virginia in 2002 to work at BPHS after receiving her undergraduate degree in Secondary Education and Earth Science from Millersville University of Pennsylvania. Mrs.Spellman went on to obtain a Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction in Literacy from George Mason University in 2007. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her husband and her new baby girl, Grace.

Cecelia Stant, Special Education Department

Mrs. Stant is in her nineteenth year of teaching. She is a graduate of Old Dominion University with a master's degree in education. Mrs. Stant has been a member of the Black Hawk faculty at Brooke Point for eight years.

Jason Stariha, Science and Social Studies Departments

Mr. Stariha is in his fifth year teaching at Brooke Point High School. Born and raised in Michigan, Mr. Stariha graduated from Central Michigan University in 2003 with a Bachelor of Science in Education, Secondary concentration. His major was in History; his minor was in Earth Science. Mr. Stariha is the Girls' Tennis Varsity Coach, and Girls' Varsity Assistant Coach. In past years, Mr. Stariha has taught Environmental Science, Earth Science, and World History 9. This year Mr. Stariha will be teaching Ecology.

Meghan Stone, Foreign Language Department Chair

Mrs. Stone is in her sixth year of teaching. She is a graduate of the University of Virginia with a degree in Spanish. She is currently working on her Masters of Education at the University of Mary Washington. Mrs. Stone has been a member of the Black Hawk faculty at Brooke Point for two years. Other teaching locations include two years in Austin, Texas and half a year in Lima, Peru. Mrs. Stone is the sponsor of the National Spanish Honor Society/ Spanish club and is the Assistant Colorguard Director for the Brooke Point Marching Band.

Rosemary Storaska, Business Department

Ms. Storaska is entering her fourth year at Brooke Point High School in the CTE Department. She earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Education & Economics from Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania in 1972. In 1983, Ms. Storaska received a Masters of Education degree with an emphasis in Economics. In 2001 she was awarded a Masters of Science Degree in Instructional Technology through Bloomsburg University. Ms. Storaska is also a certified Corporate Instructional Trainer and Distance/E-learning specialist.  Prior to arriving in Stafford she worked as Head of ICT at St. Paul’s College of Technology in London, England. Ms. Storaska was recently listed on the Cambridge and Biltmore Publications, Who’s Who for Professionals and plans to obtain a PhD in the field of IT. She has four children. Ms. Storaska spends her free time assisting various charities including the Children’s National Medical Center in DC and the Buskaid Soweto String Project in South Africa.

Ms. Sutherland is the Director of Bands for Brooke Point High School. She teaches Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Percussion Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, Wind Ensemble and the Marching Black-Hawks. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education from Virginia Commonwealth University and is currently working on a Master’s Degree in Music Education from Virginia Commonwealth University. She holds membership in numerous professional education and music education organizations. Ms. Sutherland founded the Stafford Silver Winds Flute Choir in 2004. Still an active performer, she performs at various churches and events in the area. Ms. Sutherland’s honors include multiple listings in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers. In 1998, she was named H.H. Poole Middle School Teacher of the Year.

Mrs. Tyson has taught some type of Science for the last twenty-two years. Arriving at Brooke Point the opening year from James Monroe High School, she quickly found her niche in Stafford County Schools. With three daughters slated to graduate from North Stafford as well as a husband who had graduated from Stafford High School, she knew the quality and commitment demanded of Stafford's teachers. A love of geology fostered at Madison College in the seventies, culminated at Mary Washington as she received her Environmental teaching certificate to compliment her B.S. degree. The Tysons live on the family farm raising cows, pigs, Christmas trees and being visited by five gorgeous grandchildren.

Penny Upshaw, Science Department

Mrs. Upshaw currently teaches Biology and Ecology at Brooke Point and is in her nineteeth year of teaching. This is her fourth year at Brooke Point after having taught for fifteen years in Caroline County where she lives. Mrs. Upshaw received her undergrad degree from Bridgewater College and has completed graduate work at William and Mary and the University of Nebraska at Kearney where she is currently seeking a Masters in Biology.

Jill Van Hook, Physical Education Department

Ms. Van Hook teaches PE 10 as well as Elective PE I/II at Brooke Point High School. She has been coaching Varsity Field Hockey since 2006. She received a Bachelor of Science from Virginia Commonwealth University in Physical Education and specialization in Kinesiotherapy. She has been teaching seven years with the last three at Brooke Point High School.

Cathy Van Valzah, Social Studies Department Chair

This is Mrs. Van Valzah’s twenty-fourth year teaching in Stafford County Public Schools. She received her teaching degree from Concord College located in West Virginia. She was named the Teacher of the Year for Brooke Point 2002/2003.  This year she is teaching World History I and Psychology. She also serves as a C.A.M.P. Coordinator and Multicultural Club Sponsor 

Mary VanHorn, Foreign Language Department

Mrs. VanHorn received her Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of Minnesota and her Master of Arts from George Mason University. She is a fellow of the Ortega y Gasset Foundation, Madrid, Spain. She has been teaching for thirty years, enjoys gardening, leaded glass, and her four grandchildren.

Amy Wall, Career and Technology Education Department

Ms. Wall is in her seventh year of teaching. This is her sixth year with the Black-Hawks. She holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Technology Education from Fairmont State University. She teaches three classes at BPHS: Manufacturing Systems, Advanced Manufacturing Systems, and Engineering Drawing and Design. In addition to teaching, she is also the advisor to the Student Council Association.

Scott Walters, Science Department

Mr. Walters is a Chemistry teacher at Brooke Point High School. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry that he earned in 1989 from the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. He worked for Pfizer Pharmaceuticals for 8 years before earning a second BS degree in Secondary Education in 2003 from the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. Mr. Walters is currently beginning his 4th year of teaching at Brooke Point. He is originally from Johnstown, Pennsylvania then a 10 year stay in Groton, Connecticut before coming to live in Stafford County.

Sean Weaver, Math Department

Mr. Weaver is a math teacher and football coach at Brooke Point High School. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics and a Secondary Mathematics Teaching Certification from Thiel College, located in western Pennsylvania. Mr. Weaver is currently working on his Master of Education in Secondary Mathematics at the University of Mary Washington.  This will be Mr. Weaver’s first year at Brooke Point High School. He has spent the past three years teaching math and coaching football at King George High School.

Kevin Weeks, Career and Technology Education Department

Mr. Weeks is one of the few remaining charter members of BPHS, joining the Blackhawk team in the fall of 1993. He was graduated from Virginia Tech with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Arts Education, and accepted his first full-time teaching assignment at North Stafford High School when it opened in 1981. Technical Drawing, Engineering Drawing, and Architectural Drawing are among the courses Mr. Weeks has most recently taught. An inevitable consequence of planting career roots in one place is that Mr. Weeks is now teaching second-generation students. That is, he is teaching the children of former students.

Eva Wehrle, Fine and Performing Arts Department

Eva Wehrle is in her 13th year of teaching. She is a graduate of the University of Southern Oregon with a degree in Secondary Education, Theatre/Speech and English. Eva has been a member of the Black Hawk faculty at Brooke Point for 13 years. She teaches Drama 1, 2, and 3 and is a sponsor of the Brooke Point Players. She also directs after school main stage productions with students. Eva is a former Marine, married to a former Marine. She has two grown daughters, both having graduated from Brooke Point. Her current hobbies involve taking care of her two Chesapeake Bay Retrievers.

Kimberly Whitehouse, Business Department

Mrs. Whitehouse joined the Brooke Point staff this year. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (Finance major) from the University of Florida (GO GATORS!) and a Master of Science in Computer Science from the Naval Postgraduate School. Mrs. Whitehouse retired from the Marine Corps in 2004 after over 21 years of service.

Dawn Whitehurst, Foreign Language Department

Mrs. Whitehurst has been teaching for eleven years. She graduated from Furman University with a BA in French and received her masters from the University of Georgia. She has been a member of the Black Hawk faculty at Brooke Point for 3 years.
